This Day in History: August 28 Has a Habit of Making History

Some dates seem to collect history. August 28 is one of them.

On August 28, 1963, roughly 250,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C., for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The demonstration brought together civil rights, labor, religious and political organizations demanding federal action on racial equality and economic opportunity. The event culminated at the Lincoln Memorial, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The National Archives describes the march as one of the largest demonstrations for human rights in American history and notes that its organizers met with President John F. Kennedy afterward.
