The demonstration brought together civil rights, labor, religious and political organizations demanding federal action on racial equality and economic opportunity. The event culminated at the Lincoln Memorial, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The National Archives describes the march as one of the largest demonstrations for human rights in American history and notes that its organizers met with President John F. Kennedy afterward.
